NO.409

While I was out with my Grandma yesterday, she mentioned several times that the shop houses along Serangoon Road reminded her of something during her childhood days when her family migrated from Hong Kong to Singapore. She had a cantonese name of the place in mind, but neither of us could translate it to english. Then when we were walking through Ann Siang Hill/Club Street, she got even more excited, saying that this had to be the right place, the very first area she lived at in Singapore back in the 1930’s. She managed to confirm this and the area with an elderly couple who were also walking through the area. I haven’t seen her this happy to rediscover something, she kept saying that images of her younger days spent in the area were flashing back to memory. If only I could really see and compare what the country and the people were like back then, and today.
